Isn't That Sweet ...
Our Sister Kitchen Manager is known for getting creative with her liturgically-themed menus - Italian “Eggs in Purgatory” for All Souls’ Day, chicken strips with assorted dips for the Baptism of the Lord (get it? DIPPING?), and even some of our Christmas pumpkin bread for the Annunciation (the Incarnation started 9 months before December 25th, after all!). So we shouldn’t have been surprised when she came up with a unique way to celebrate the Dedication of St. John Lateran this Sunday …
Yes, folks, that is a GINGERBREAD BASILICA! What sweeter tribute could there be to this “mother church of Christendom” than a miniature edible facsimile?? (For what it’s worth, the white frosted cookies are supposed to be papal zucchetti :) )
Of course, where the Cathedral of Rome is, there the Bishop of Rome should be as well:
There you have it - possibly the first-ever gingerbread-man portrait of Pope Leo!
As we enjoy these culinary masterpieces, we lift our hearts in gratitude to God for the gift of our Holy Mother Church and of our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV. Oremus pro pontifice! (Let us pray for the Pope!)
